Learning for Life: Educational Words of Wisdom Review by Gena Suarez and Nancy K. Baetz

What a wonderful resource! Here is a book with almost 3,000 quotations from various individuals throughout the ages. These are not just any quotes, however. These little quips emerged from hardworking, thinking people who wanted to inspire those who heard them speak or read their works. Men like John Adams, James Madison, C.S. Lewis, George MacDonald, James Madison, Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt, Blaise Pascal, Abraham Lincoln, John Wesley; and more contemporary writers such as James Dobson and D. James Kennedy are quoted. Artists like Frank Lloyd Wright, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and William Shakespeare, and women such as Abigail Adams, Charlotte Mason, Jane Austen, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Anne Sullivan and Helen Keller are represented here. The list goes on! Learning for Life is a perfect addition to any homeschool reference library. It’s also handy for my “writers bookbag,” a small, limited bag of “much needed” books I take with me on writing seminar conferences where I meet and critique with aspiring writers. Essay writing and authorship just got easier! This is a must-have book and is highly inspirational for writers!

Product Review by: Gena Suarez, Publisher, The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine

Do you love words? Do you appreciate and seek out wise sayings? Are you often wishing you had just the right expression or quote to illustrate a point in your writing or homeschooling? Well, look no further! Teri Ann Berg Olsen, the founder of Knowledge House Learning Resource Center, has put her love of words and books together and compiled a superb collection of quotations. Learning For Life: Educational Word of Wisdom is a resource that belongs on every homeschooler's desk.

A unique feature of this volume is the biographical information gleaned about each author. In the past, I have used quotations that seemed to stand on their own merits, only to discover the speaker was of questionable character. The biographical information Teri includes eliminates this problem and makes the book that much more helpful for the user.

This unique reference volume begins with the ultimate source of wisdom--Scripture. Following that are sections dealing with education, teaching, study, learning, family, and many others! Teri includes the biographical listings and an appendix and also lists the sources alphabetically. Although she writes in her afterword that there is no way to ever include all the quotes she has discovered, she has done a marvelous job of putting this collection together in a well-thought-out, well-organized way. She even has an interactive section of her website so you can find additional quotes not included in her book, or even submit your own suggestions.

Teri is also the author of many articles and has a tremendous website full of information for homeschoolers all over (and also specific information for Arizona homeschooling families). Be sure to spend time perusing her other creative endeavors!

We have our Bibles, our dictionaries, our thesaurus, our style book, and maybe even our Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. But if you are a homeschooling family, Learning for Life is the reference book that is missing from your collection. Don't go another day without it! Each page will add to your wisdom and knowledge, and as the saying goes, "The best treasure that a man can attain unto in this world is true knowledge." ~Jacob Boehme. (p. 257)
