Katy, by Mary Evelyn Notgrass, is a wholesome story about a family and their decision whether or not to homeschool. The reading level is upper elementary and above. I believe it will especially appeal to girls ages 9-12.
Miss Notgrass is a homeschool graduate. She is the director of a dramatic society for homeschooled children and has written several historical dramas. Her writing style is comfortable and easy to read.
The heroine of the book, Katy Porter, worries that being homeschooled will make her different. By the end of the book she learns that being different is okay. I won't give away the details; you will have to read the book to find out what happens to Katy and her family.
Katy is a sweet story. I like that the family is a close family. My 14 and 16-year-old daughters read the book, but felt that it was written for a younger audience. I appreciate the clutter free pages and simple illustrations. I hope that Miss Notgrass continues on with Katy's story and we get to read what happens to her and her family in the future.
