Her innocent eyes look up at you as she asks, "Mom, what is that book about?" referring to the Bible in your hands. What do you do? A general answer might work, but you have this wonderful opportunity to share more than just a short answer. You have the chance to help her invite Jesus into her heart. As a Christian parent, I want my children to know God and invite Him into their hearts. I know they need clear, simple, and biblically accurate answers in order to do this.
Family Life Publishing and Charles Boyd, a pastor, have teamed up to provide parents with a tool to help pass on the legacy of faith in Christ. What God Has Always Wanted is a hardcover children's book with vivid illustrations by Dennas Davis. It is written in a child-friendly yet engaging style.
"As a pastor listening to children's baptismal testimonies, I realized that we were not equipping parents to share the Gospel with their children in a way they can understand. They need to hear God's story told in a way they can easily grasp while remaining biblically accurate," said Boyd.
What God Has Always Wanted is nondenominational, which makes it a wonderful addition for every child's library. Within 22 pages, Boyd takes your child from Genesis to Revelation, illustrating every part of the journey to make the story come alive. The "What About You?" questions leave nothing to chance, covering such issues as trust, forgiveness, and prayer to help your child learn what it means to invite Jesus into his or her heart.
Boyd understands that our children will ask questions, especially as this book is read over and over again. He thoughtfully added a glossary to help us define terms such as Bible, church, commandments, death, eternal life, faith, heaven, hell, Jesus, Satan (the Devil), and sin. I truly appreciated this when I read the book to my children. My daughter wanted to understand more about sin, and I was able to read the definition in the glossary to her. She understood and even repeated it back to me! Actually, the glossary is the only area where I would make an improvement. I would remove the Calvinist theology to make it more nondenominational, but overall those elements are nonessential and easy to skip.
What God Has Always Wanted is a delightful way to share the Gospel with your children. This book would be a wonderful gift to any family.
