Spanish for Kids is a DVD and booklet set from Language Tree. The tagline on the DVD case is "the fun and easy way to learn Spanish," and I would have to agree. The DVD is short (only about 35 minutes in length), but it contains five complete lessons covering everyday conversations in Spanish. Also included are interactive games to test your child's comprehension and fun sing-along songs to help reinforce the phrases learned. This volume teaches 70 practical phrases and vocabulary words. The booklet contains all the vocabulary words presented on the DVD, along with their translations.
Spanish for Kids is not specifically created for homeschoolers; rather, it would be appropriate for any young child with an interest in the Spanish language. The description on the DVD case states that it "is perfect for beginner students of all ages." My personal opinion is that it would be ideal for preschoolers and early-elementary aged students.
I enjoyed this program. It was easy to sit down and view it with my children all in one sitting, but it also could easily be broken down into smaller segments to be used over a period of several days. My 1-year-old, who is not normally interested in the television, really enjoyed this DVD; it held his attention with the music, bright colors, and 3-D images. My 7-year-old enjoyed the real-life characters and the fun interactive games (using the DVD remote control). She was also proud of the certificate, which can be printed out on the publisher's website at the completion of this course (with a password provided on the DVD). We love adding things like this to our portfolios!
I would recommend this program for young children with an interest in learning basic conversational Spanish. This is not an in-depth language program for older children and/or adults, but it is certainly a fun, enjoyable program for young children.
