Beauty and the Pig
A Study of Godly Beauty
By Pam Forster

Doorposts- Beauty and the Pig is a new study by Pam Forster. You will - Learn how to study God's Word while you study what God says about true beauty. -The name of the book comes from Proverbs 11:22 which says, "As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion." The first purpose of this collection of studies is for you to help your daughters understand the difference between outward beauty and inner beauty and learn about godly attitudes and actions that characterize the life of a truly beautiful woman. The secondary purpose is to teach your child to be students of the Word of God. You will look up original Hebrew or Greek meanings, compare passages of Scripture, and study the lives of women in the Bible. They recommend you use a Topical Bible (Naves) and Strong's Exhaustive Concordance with this guide, and they even teach you how to read the entries. You will learn how to do a word study and how to use marginal references. There are relevant questions, charts, experiments and further study options throughout.

As an example, Study number six has you looking at beauty from the book of Esther by having you assign a title to each chapter, along with a brief description of Esther's character displayed in that chapter. This book is an intensive study on beauty and one that is greatly needed in a society where importance is placed primarily on outward appearance. The recommended age level is from about nine years of age and older. For families with boys, there is even a section with alternate application questions that are designed to address young men. If you are in the market for a study on godly beauty, put the pig back in its pen, and pick up this beautiful spiral bound 106-page book. My daughter and I enjoy our times spent together studying God's Word. This is a great way to teach your daughters how to search for the hidden treasures in their Bibles, and learn about true beauty at the same time. They will remember the time spent with mom for years to come.

We have seen many character education products and programs, but Doorposts wins the prize for the absolute best. Winner of our 2001 Award of Excellence or Homeschoolers, Doorposts is a company dedicated to Godly character development in children. Lining your shelves with anything put out by Doorposts is a good idea. We want to start off by highly recommending Plants Grown Up. We have three sons and this enormous, 500 page (!) manual can be used to educate all three of them in the area of character training (along with the Bible of course, the first authority on good character). We want our sons to have a clear grasp of God's word, and understand loving their wives, giving to those in need, manners, leadership, prayer, protecting the young and the weak, humility, and all of the other wonderful topics in Plants Grown Up. We also want to recommend Polished Cornerstones for girls. Our Julia is already five years old, and we can start now with her on this. Some topics are: becoming prudent, merciful, domestic, wise, respectful, gracious, reliable, loyal, devoted, and skillful - the list goes on. Of course, we will use this for our daughter! Another excellent product they offer (Gena's personal favorite) is For Instruction in Righteousness, which will encourage you to use the Bible every time you discipline your precious ones. Topics include: theft, hypocrisy, lying, poor-manners, sinful thought life, defiance, fear, anger, gluttony, disobedience, brawling women, and more. This is so incredibly practical for daily living, as it tells us why we should not (according to the Word of God) participate in such sins, and what happens when you DO decide to sin. The rod is certainly a tool, and its proper use is commanded in God's Word. Godly, parental instruction is justas important - instructing our children to live righteously, and speaking to their hearts. This book will help you get to the hearts of your children. I love it because it is excellent to use as a devotional class with my children. You can use it for "discipline time" once your child has disobeyed or sinned in another way, but even better yet, for "character development time," which is a great way to help children learn what it means to be righteous before the Lord, helping to prevent mess ups. To date, For Instruction in Righteousness is THE best character-building book we have found, with Plants Grown Up and Polished Cornerstones as close seconds. Doorposts, winner of our much-desired EE Award, the Suarez parents are blessed to have met you!
