The Human Body: A Unit Study Review by Jennifer Barker

Kim Kargbo has developed another wonderful unit study. This particular study incorporates Bible, science, language arts, math, and arts and crafts. It is geared toward children in grades 2-5, but it can be tailored to older and younger students. You'll need approximately ten weeks to complete the study, and it can be used in conjunction with a curriculum. It should not replace phonics, spelling, reading, and grammar. The only item that is included is the guideline book. There are no CDs or other electronic components.
Before beginning the study, you should review the objectives and the list of required and recommended resources. (The specific resources that are needed for each week are listed separately from the main lesson plans.) This will help with planning ahead. There are four days of instruction per week, and each day's plan explains which activities will be done and which books will be studied. These lesson plans are very detailed and easy to follow. Of course, not all activities can be done or need to be done. This is where tailoring for your child's specific needs comes into play. The following topics will be studied:
Week 1: Overview, Skin and Hair
Week 2: Skeletal System
Week 3: Muscular System
Week 4: Respiratory System
Week 5: Digestive System
Week 6: Cleansing the Body
Week 7: Circulatory System
Week 8: Brain and Nervous System
Week 9: The 5 Senses
Week 10: Cells, Nutrition, Disease and New Life
The appendix includes Bible/Language Arts Worksheets, Worksheet Answer Keys, an Ordering the Digestive Order Worksheet, an Elimination Experiment Chart, and an Organ Match Quiz. There are some electronic resources that she recommends, but I have to say that I wish they were included. Other than that, I would recommend this unit study to anyone who is interested in learning more about how the body functions but does not want to spend a long period of time studying it.
