Daily Geography Practice, Grade 4 is a reproducible teacher’s edition workbook that includes focused skills practice to help the students “master and retain basic skills.” There are 36 lessons and over 100 geography terms. The topics include: globes, map legends, map scales, grids and different styles of maps.
The book is broken down into weeks. They give you an activity to complete each day.
For example, one week the students study Iowa. The book gives the teacher a one-half page summary of Iowa and suggestions on how to present the material. There is a map of Iowa with a few cities labeled, a few highways and the neighboring states. Then there is a worksheet with two questions per day about Iowa. Some days the student must follow the highways to find the answer. Other days the student must use the scale to answer the question. The answers to the questions are included on the teacher information page.
Daily Geography Practice, Grade 4 was designed for use by a classroom teacher. It was not modified for homeschool use. Parents who are eager to meet state or national standards at grade level would be interested in this book. There are overhead transparencies included in the book. There is also a glossary. The book follows the National Geography Standards. This includes: the world in spatial terms, places and regions, physical systems, human systems, environment and society, and the uses of geography.
I enjoyed reading Daily Geography Practice, Grade 4. It gave me a better understanding of the national standards at grade 4 for geography. I liked that the activity pages only had a few questions and that the program was organized by thematic weeks. Although the overhead pages were created for the classroom I used them with a dry erase pen with my children. They were able to trace the states or area of the map that were discussed.
If I had this book in the house I would use it on occasion with my children as a point of reference. I wouldn’t do all of the activity pages because it can be laborious. It would not be a book that I would purchase for grade 4. The information is not that detailed and I would prefer to have my child use their workbook time in an older grade when more geography material would be covered.
Daily Geography Practice, Grade 4 is a workbook that will keep the parents following the National Geography Standards at grade level. It is a reasonable book to have a child complete but too much pencil and paper work for a non-workbook family.
