Talent to Treasure is an all-in-one compact handbook on how to get started in the business of teaching music from a Christian standpoint. There are sections on the nuts and bolts of structuring the company, the "heart" or the actual practice of teaching, and Appendices with samples of letters, assignments, and music favorites.

The chapters in Part I lead the would-be entrepreneur through a series of logical and thorough questions and activities (the foremost being prayer), allowing the individual to come to his own honest conclusions about the timing of launching a business. In a nutshell, the author helps clarify motivation, planning needed, policies and procedures to consider, communication methods, and lesson plans. Part II is dedicated to the practical, hands-on, day-to-day activities. From the basics of professional presentation, expectations, and the first piano lesson to the complexities of problem students, recitals, and advanced training, this book covers it all. The icing on the cake is the real-life examples of letters, newsletters, and assignment pages in the back. Washburn also includes her favorite resources for teaching music.

Pros: Marcia Washburn is an encourager! Her uplifting quotes and appropriate Scripture notations sprinkled throughout the book help to ease the stress of considering self-employment. The book is sound and easy to read, and it offers a wealth of information. She has obviously been there, done that, and the questions that she offers the reader to consider are thoughtful and insightful. This book will bless those who read it.

Cons: This book is written from a Christian standpoint. For me, that is a plus. It may not be for others, although it could subtly minister to them as well. It is straight reading, with no fluffy, unsubstantiated ideas. The cover is not flashy, so a potential "con" would be getting all those interested in starting a music business to read the book. Once they've read it, they will appreciate the content.

The bottom line is that this is a great book for up-and-coming music entrepreneurs, regardless of age. The ideas and encouragement will transfer to other parts of their lives as well, even if they decide not to teach music.
