Countdown to Christmas Review by Kathy Gelzer

Countdown to Christmas is a collection of short stories and activities for the 25 days of December leading up to and including Christmas. There is a story to read aloud followed by at least one family activity such as a game, craft, quiz, recipe, some jokes, or a few carols. Total time needed is approximately 30-45 minutes. Sprinkled throughout the days are poems, essays, and additional carols and stories.
The book has a Victorian look to it with the included graphics and illustrations. Most of the stories, too, are taken from the Victorian period. Some of the authors are Louisa May Alcott, Charles Dickens, and Edith Nesbit.
Amy suggests previewing the day's activity to make sure you are prepared to do it and have the time to complete it. She also encourages parents to use the stories as a springboard for family discussion, especially since many of the stories include a moral or lesson. One idea I especially like is to have children look up Scripture verses on a virtue mentioned in the story of the day.
This book is designed for families, and as such the author has tried to include stories and activities with wide age appeal. I think she has succeeded. Even if your schedule isn't conducive to having a family night throughout most of December, you can incorporate these sessions when and where possible. Church groups would also find this book helpful.
Countdown to Christmas is a great way to bring the family together in the evenings, and Christmas is a natural time to do this.
