The Case for Creation (DVD) Review by Carissa Ruiz

The Case for Creation is a documentary based on the book titled The Case for a Creator: A Journalist Investigates Scientific Evidence That Points Toward God, by Lee Stobel, published in 2004. This sixty-minute DVD follows Lee Stobel's journey as a journalist who looked at some of the compelling evidence for Creation. This DVD also includes a forty-minute bonus feature.

The account begins with Lee Stobel explaining how he was skeptical about Christianity and its belief system. He was convinced the issue about evolution was settled, and he was dumbfounded by the fact that any one could not understand the "truth" in forensic science. So after his wife became a Christian, he felt compelled to search out what he believed and what Christians believed. Using his background in law school and journalism, he decided to do some fact checking.

In this documentary, he retraces some of his fact checking. First, he researches what he already believed, including some of the major experiments that had convinced him his evolutionary beliefs were true. To his surprise, he discovered that most of the ideas he believed had been disproven, never proven, or reported incorrectly. This caused him to start to wonder what the truth was. He read all sides of the issues he was studying and came to the conclusion that there were indeed order and purpose in the universe, the world, life, and molecular biology. He could not deny that there was evidence of a Creator.

This documentary highlights the major points from Mr. Stobel's book and is a good overview of the evidence for Intelligent Design. It covers an array of topics, including cosmology, cellular biology, DNA research, astronomy, physics, and human consciousness. Each topic is covered briefly yet done well enough that one should at least consider the evidence.

In fact, I would call this a "best of" DVD from Illustra Media. Many of the video clips in this documentary come from other documentaries produced by Illustra Media, so if you find this DVD interesting, I recommend you purchase the other documentaries they produce. They are done well and more in depth. I also recommend this DVD if you get one chance to show this type of information to a non-believer or a skeptic, as there is bound to be something in it that will challenge their thinking.

Although I liked this film, I would like to point out to the viewer a couple of concerns. Most of the people interviewed in the DVD are associated with Discovery Institute (DI). Though it's my understanding that Stobel interviewed many other credentialed people to prove his thesis for his book, in the film, due to limited time, he focused on the major highlights of his book, which seemed to include mostly people from DI.

My next concern is that some may rest their faith on science and man-made reason. This documentary is good and quite convincing, but it, too, is fallible. The things in it may one day be shown to be incorrect. What does one do, then? Should we cast off our faith? God forbid! When scientists said the world was flat, God knew the truth and still reigned. When man thought we came from shrews to primates, God knew the truth and still reigned. In other words, no matter what new wave of science--pro or against Creation--suggests, the truth still stands: God reigns, and faith must be established by belief without sight or else it is not faith. (See 2 Corinthians 5:7 and Hebrews 11:1.)

So, watch this documentary. Enjoy it, learn from it, and share it with others, but please do not establish your faith on it. Faith comes from hearing and hearing from the Word of God (Romans 10:17).
