Walking with Bilbo: A Devotional Adventure Through The Hobbit Review by Amy Osborn

By Sarah Arthur
http://www.saraharthur.info/

I'm not sure who was more excited about the chance to read this book--my children or my husband! In fact, the moment the book entered our home, he took possession of it! And, now that we know that the author, Sarah Arthur, also wrote the devotionals Walking with Frodo and Walking Through the Wardrobe, I suspect we'll be adding those books to our family library soon.

While this book is intended for youth, just about every member of our family enjoyed it. Not only did this devotional allow us to consider one of our family's favorite books in a different light, but it also encouraged and challenged us in our Spiritual journey, regardless of our age.

Each chapter begins with a line or two from The Hobbit, and then Sarah Arthur has the ability to relate that to our daily life. Not all of her applications applied to our family, as we are not daily in a classroom setting with age-appropriate peers. But many of her applications did work for us. And even if you are not quite as familiar with Tolkien as some, there is a glossary in the back to help you understand some of the locations, people, and creatures mentioned in Tolkien's books. Each chapter concludes with a section entitled "Going Further." It has questions to help you apply what you read. There are also Scripture references if you would like to read more about the topic.

We have really enjoyed our time with this book, and I suspect it is one we will reuse in our homeschool journey.
