I don't know about you, but I love learning about how other people from faraway places live! With Families of the World, an award winning video series, you can do just that. Each DVD features a different country and allows you to see firsthand the unique lives of two children and their families.

My children and I watched the Families of USA DVD, which spotlights a rural family from North Dakota and an urban family from Delaware. The video is about 30 minutes long and is told from a child's point of view. Kyle from North Dakota is 5, and he explains what life is like living on a large farm. Kristin from Delaware is 10, and she takes us on a journey to her school, dance class, and other activities.

Even though the USA DVD was interesting, my children all agree that they would have preferred watching one of the other DVDs in the series--one which featured families from a different country. Learning about the unfamiliar is always far more fascinating!

In my opinion, it would be quite a financial investment to own any or all of these DVDs. For just one DVD, you will spend $29.95 plus $6.99 for shipping and handling. I do have great news, though, for those of us who live in the United States. Families of the World broadcasts on PBS (Public Broadcasting Stations), so you can check your local listings. If your station doesn't air this series, you can make a request at www.pbs.org.

Also, I just checked my local library's website, and they carry the Families of the World DVDs. You can bet that I will be requesting all 23 titles this year to enhance our homeschool learning experience! They will be the perfect addition to our geography lessons.

One last note: If you'd like to get a taste of these videos before you buy, you can watch on PBS, or check them out at your library. You can go to www.familiesoftheworld.com and preview trailers of some of the episodes. If you're like me, you won't waste any time finding out how you can watch all of the DVDs with your kids!
