The Cat at Night is a lovely hardback children's book for cat lovers by the talented author and artist, Dahlov Ipcar. What does the cat do at night outside the farmhouse? The farmer thinks all he does is sleep, but we learn what the cat is really doing--exploring and adventuring in the outdoors!
Since the cat can see at night, we discover all the many things he sees that we day-dwellers miss. The book presents scenes from our perspective in the dark and then the following pages are the cat's perspective with full color. We happen to have a black cat that is quite similar to the book's cat and it was fun for my little girls to think of what he may be doing as he wanders our neighborhood at night.
You will likely be familiar with the artwork as the author and artist began her career as the illustrator for Margaret Wise Brown's book, The Little Fisherman. This launched Ipcar's own career. Ever since the 1940's she has created many wonderfully illustrated books for children. Among them are such treasures as My Wonderful Christmas Tree and Brown Cow Farm. The unique colorful artwork engages the eye and its whimsical artistic perspective will be enjoyed by both adults and children. This is a lovely book and I highly recommend it.
