The Glory of Kings: Bible-Connected Literature-Based Science Curriculum Review by Kim Kargbo

This science curriculum is designed for students in grades K-3. It is a literature-based curriculum with a Biblical emphasis. There are three units contained in this study: human body, space, and animal classifications. A resource list (of the books required for the unit) and a materials list are included in the front of the spiral bound, non-consumable teacher's guide. There is also a list of memory verses for older or advanced students to add to their study.

I love that each week contains only two days of lessons. This allows for great flexibility with the lessons. If you do science all week, you can accomplish two weeks of study each week. If you don't, you won't feel pressured to get more done than you can accomplish in a week. Lessons consist of a memory verse related to the topic, a reading selection, discussion questions and an activity. The second day of the week's lesson consists of reviewing the memory verse and discussion question, a Bible connection, and an additional activity. Each unit consists of ten weeks of study (two days each week). Reproducible worksheets are included for each unit as well as a unit test at a 3 rd grade reading level for those who desire tests. If your child is not at an appropriate reading level for the test but you still wish to test him, you can read the test aloud and either take dictation on the student's answers or just do the test orally.

The unit study is thorough but not overwhelming. The lessons are very doable, and the instructions are easy to follow. The activities are relevant and would be fun for most children. I would recommend this unit study to homeschooling families with 3 rd grade children. This would also be a good study for those trying to incorporate younger children into school with older children who might be studying some of these concepts at a higher level. It would allow the younger students to study the same material and save the parent a lot of time and effort in reworking the material to a lower level.

The unit study is not yet available in retail outlets; it can be purchased only from the author herself. It sells for $20, and you can order by writing her at gwen.silverliningpress@juno.com. She is also working on a second study manual covering weather, electricity, and oceanography. This is an excellent resource for those wanting to study through living books and a unit study approach.
