Wake Up Clarinet! is an audio jazz CD by musician Oran Etkin intended to introduce children to the clarinet and to the fundamentals of music. Through nine tracks with a running time of about 23 minutes, children experience the personality of the clarinet along with a variety of rhythms, melodies, and other musical concepts. Etkin calls his method of teaching "Timbalooloo." Incorporating rhythms and melodies from all over the world, the Timbalooloo method teaches musical concepts through games, stories, and songs. Etkin sees music as a language and strives with this recording to help children learn to speak it fluently.
Young children will enjoy the rhythms and repetition. My two-year-old especially loves the track "High Low," a song about pitch. In "Little Lamb Jam" Etkin and his friends turn a familiar children's rhyme into a lovely jazz piece. Wake Up, Clarinet! introduces children to the personality of Clara Net, a talking instrument. The target audience is young children, but the lessons are not dumbed down at all. The quality of music is superb. Wake Up Clarinet! is a rich addition to the music library of toddlers and preschoolers.
