Bluebonnet Time is a hardback book recommended for children in grades 1-5. There are 32 pages. The book is from the point of view of a boy whose father plays the guitar, whose mother is an illustrator, and whose grandmother is a former science teacher. The family goes to the father's home state of Texas to visit the grandparents, and the boy fills out his science journal there. The main focus is the state flower of Texas, the bluebonnet. The tradition in Texas, it seems, is to find the biggest field of bluebonnets you can find and have your picture taken in the middle of it all decked out in your cowboy hat. In the process, the boy learns many interesting facts about the bluebonnets and their interactions with bees.
This book comes with a CD of the song Bluebonnet Time sung enthusiastically by the Singing Zoologist himself, author Lucas Miller.
The book is beautifully illustrated, and each page has a lot going on, much like the pages of a scrapbook, or in this case, a science journal. The story is fun and informative, and I can unequivocally say that I love this book! I'm not in grades 1-5, but this book is still going on my "favorites shelf." My youngest granddaughter will be in Grade 1 next year, but she didn't have to wait that long to enjoy the book. She gives it a big thumbs up too.
