From the ZonderKids Biography Series, Defender of the Faith: The Mike Fisher Story is a refreshingly positive story about a young boy who worked hard, stuck to his faith, and became one of the NHL's best players. Aimed at 9-12 year olds, this exciting 115-page biography tells the story of Mike Fisher, from his childhood in Ontario, to his becoming a Christian, to his passion for hockey and other extreme adventures. His physical and spiritual challenges and successes are detailed in ways that 'tweens can relate to and his mission-minded activities are inspirational to all.
For some young readers, especially boys, finding positive books that they are willing to read can be a challenge. Defender of the Faith: The Mike Fisher Story fits the bill and more. Mike Fisher has played in the Stanley Cup finals, served as co-captain for the Ottawa Senators, and now plays for the NHL's Nashville Predators. He is certainly a "cool" hockey player, but an even cooler Christian. His faith is real and tangible enough for kids to latch onto.
This book can be used as a read aloud or as a read alone. It could be used for casual reading or as part of a language arts or character/Bible study curriculum. It is appropriate for one student or a class full of students.
While some students may only know Mike Fisher as Carrie Underwood's husband, this book will quickly show them that he is a Christian worth knowing in his own right, and that his motivation is to please God first, both on and off the ice. Right or wrong, celebrities have a way of influencing kids. However, in the case of Mike Fisher, it's not such a bad thing!
