The Industrial Revolution: Investigate How Science and Technology Changed the World is a book written for children ages 9 to 12. It is 120 pages long, divided into 8 chapters, and includes 25 hands on projects. The time period covered is from the early 1700s through the early 1900s.
The eight chapters are titled:
- A Revolution Begins with Textiles
- The Industrial Revolution Comes to America
- Birth of the Labor Union
- Transportation
- Communication
- Thomas Edison and Electricity
- Captains of Industry
- Moving into the Twentieth Century
The book begins with a timeline and short introduction, and concludes with a glossary and an index.
Each chapter is filled with information about major inventions and changes that occurred which fueled the Industrial Revolution. It begins with the invention of the Spinning Jenny, and concludes with the combustion engine and the radio, and covers several more inventions in between. The text is easy to read, and there are boxes throughout that highlight and define words the student may not know. Each chapter concludes with hands on projects. Projects include making a hand loom for weaving cloth, making an electronic telegraph, and making a pinhole camera.
The Industrial Revolution: Investigate How Science and Technology Changed the World is a wonderful book to use as a jumping off point for this time period in history. The information is interesting and the projects add a bit of hands on learning without being overwhelming. I’d recommend this book to anyone interested in the Industrial Revolution.
