Athens during its Golden Age is the setting for Theras and his Town. Theras is a young, patriotic, Athenian boy. Athenian culture at its peak is described beautifully. What was school like? What did boys do for fun? What was it like to worship the Greek gods? These questions and more answered in the book. Then, Theras becomes separated from his family and is taken to Sparta. The contrast and conflict between Athens and Sparta becomes clear as Theras tries to adjust to life in Sparta. Spartan warrior culture is portrayed as Theras must join the other boys in their training. Theras also finds that the worship of the gods is more harsh and frightening in Sparta than in Athens. Through all his adventures and trials, he never gives up hope of returning to Athens. Intended for grade 5 and up, this book makes important aspects of ancient Greek culture come alive.
