Grace and Truth Books Review by Jenefer Igarashi and Louise Carlton
http://www.graceandtruthbooks.com/"We've hit the literature jackpot!...you will be in book heaven!" -- The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine
We've hit the literature jackpot! What an absolute treasure trove. We, here at The Old Schoolhouse®, are so excited to have stumbled upon Grace and Truth Books. If you are a lover of truth, or of purity, or of history, or (and especially) of literature, you will be in book heaven!
Grace and Truth Books has dedicated years to seeking out and re-printing godly works from the past that are hard or seemingly impossible to find. Fiction, non-fiction, biographies, church history, American history, devotionals, character building stories, essays - there is something for every student and every age. These are works that would enhance and supplement any school subject.
You might want to start by getting a copy of The Duties of Parents by J.C. Ryle. Originally printed by Wm. Hunt & Co, in 1888, this concise, parenting "handbook" is a must-read for all parents! The Duties of Parents sums up briefly, but so powerfully, the scriptural foundations of parenting and principles that seem to have been lost in present generations. Reprinted works from the likes of John Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, Martin Luther and Charles Spurgeon are also available and offered from Grace and Truth. You will want to visit their website at www.graceandtruthbooks.com
Also, keep careful watch of the TOS™ contest room. Founder and President, Pastor Dennis Gunderson, has generously donated some wonderful items to us from Grace and Truth that you will want! We have enjoyed getting to know Dennis and are excited to present and highly recommend his own personal works (which are so incredibly good - see the Training Children with Grace and Truth review below) and the other wonderful Grace and Truth titles as a great supplement to any homeschool.

Training Children with Grace and Truth
By Dennis Gunderson
What are your most foundational desires in schooling your child at home? For what are you preparing them?
In our home, academics is extremely important, but it takes a far second to the moral and heart training needed to be instilled to prepare my children for real life. My husband and I listened to the tape series, Training Children with Grace and Truth, and were encouraged and strengthened in our resolve. My husband, actually, listened to them first (as he spends a lot of time driving for work), and was the one who prodded me to sit down with him to listen. In this eye opening, five tape series, Mr. Gunderson speaks clearly and candidly on subjects addressing developing a good conscience in your child, moral lessons directed specifically for sons, and how older literature (from past centuries) can be an excellent resource for both academic and character training. There is also a tape on dating and this tape alone is worth more than its weight in gold. My husband, in particular, was excited about how it was presented so understandably and in a way that did not seem foreign or extreme, despite the culture to which we have grown accustomed. Biblically based, balanced and entertaining to listen to, I highly encourage any family to use this excellent resource as they strive to build strong foundations for their families and for their children's futures. In preparation for the real life lessons, Training Children with Grace and Truth is a must have for any homeschool family.

Gustavus Adolphus, a Hero of the Reformation
by C.A. LaCroix
"Any student of church history will enjoy learning of this man." - The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine
I grew up in the Lutheran Church and, therefore, I was moderately acquainted with the Reformation period of church history. However, Gustavus Adolphus was a name I had never heard. This book presented a chance to learn more. I anticipated an historical biography with plenty of action and insight into Christianity in the 17th century. Because of his endeavors to keep Germany from succumbing to the rule and grip of the Catholic Church, Adolphus is named a hero. He loved the doctrines embodied in Protestantism enough to take his country, Sweden, into war. A gentle man, loving husband, godly leader and military genius, he was willing to fight to save Protestantism in Germany.
Before reading this book, I naively assumed that when Martin Luther nailed his theses to the door of the castle church at Wittenberg, life for Christians took an easy turn. This book helped inform me as to the complications surrounding that act and the difficult fight that remained for the truth of the Word of God to remain known. Any student of church history will enjoy learning of this man. They will almost certainly be thankful for the results achieved in part because of Gustavus Adolphus' courage and commitment to truth.
