Poetry Adventures: Underneath My Bed Review by Jennifer Ladewig

List Poems

Underneath My Bed is a fun poetry book that features list poems. The book contains 15 poems and is 32 pages in length. This book retails for $6.95 in paperback and $26.65 in library bound version.

Underneath My Bed is a collection of list poems. What exactly are list poems? They are poems that list things, places, people, sounds, events, etc. The poems can be serious or downright silly. They do not always rhyme. List poems may make you laugh, cringe, smile, or ponder a deep thought. This book is targeted for children in grades 2-5. With that said, I enjoyed reading through the poems.

My 3rd and 5th grade children read through the poems in this book. They were a bit confused because these poems were not like most poems they have been exposed to. They both thought it was interesting that a poem could have its focus be on lists of things. Both of my children really liked the poem entitled, The Glove Compartment of Our Van. The poem talks about all of the crazy odds and ends that you may find in the glove compartment, everything that is except GLOVES! We all laughed at the poem entitled, Going Green, because it is about allergies. Our whole family suffers with allergies and can so relate to the “dripping like a faucet from my nose” kind of days. Both of my children wrote their own list poems and drew a picture to go along with their poem.

I really enjoyed this book and so did my children. I would highly recommend this poetry book to both educators and parents. This would be a great addition to your child’s library or to give as a gift. This book is truly a poetry adventure!
