My oldest son loves to study his Bible. He has often been called the “little preacher boy”. I love seeing a desire within him to learn and grow in the Word of God. But he is still a little boy and so it is always a blessing to find study materials that are just for him. When we found the Alone with God Bible Study Series, (King James Version) we were so very excited. He was eager to begin when he got his hands on I Can Study Jonah & Ruth.

There are thirteen lessons included within this book and each lesson is broken down into activities for Monday through Saturday. I love that each one begins with Pray. Every week there is a Memory Verse to learn and then a section called Think & Pray About It. I love that one so much! Of course, each lesson also includes a number of questions, space is given to write out the answers, encouraging our children to review and recall those important points from each week’s scriptures.

While both Ruth and Jonah are smaller books in the Bible, this study shows that they are just as powerful as the bigger books. Being alone with God, my son was encouraged to consider what it really means to be thankful and what all those excuses we tend to make, are really saying. There were lessons in sharing and the value of hard work. Simple yet poignant reminders that respectfulness and obedience to those in authority matters. Does our character show others Godly virtue?

From teaching the value of daily devotions to geographical facts, vocabulary and interesting historical details, there is so much to learn in this book. And it is so nicely organized too; simple for younger ones to follow. Throughout the pages too, there are little boxes which provide additional information, questions to ponder and Biblical details that help to go just a little deeper.

I know this is meant for children but I have to say I got quite a bit out of these lessons myself. These are wonderful for inspiring our children to have time at the Lord’s feet. What a wonderful way to encourage our children to learn and know the scriptures for themselves.
