The Dialogues of Fenelon leave quite an impression on the hearts and minds of its readers, despite its small size. At just 4x6 inches, this pocket-sized book contains powerful truths from the Word of God. The 49 chapters are spread over 146 pages, leaving each chapter about three pages’ length.
Francois Fenelon’s wisdom and counsel were sought after by many in the 17th century. This book is a beautiful compilation of some of his letters to friends, family, and colleagues.
Each chapter is a letter written to someone. Sometimes the letter says who it was written to, sometimes not. However, they do each have a title. Titles like Peace Amid Trial, Acceptance of God’s Will, To Avoid Disdainful Manners, and To Calm the Imagination fill the book. Each short chapter bursts with wisdom drawn from scripture.
When I first began reading the book, I thought I could sit and read several chapters at a time, as time would allow. But immediately I was proved wrong. The concise chapters are so profound that it isn’t possible to truly absorb what you’ve just read, contemplate on it, and apply it to your life if you read more than one at a time.
I instead began reading just one a day, usually in the wee hours of the morning while enjoying my first cup of tea. Some chapters offer wisdom that I’ll be able to apply later in life. Others, like On Keeping Silence, I (and those around me) could benefit from me applying now.
About half way through the book, I realized this would be a perfect item for copywork. I had my 14-year-old daughter begin copying one chapter a day as her morning Bible copywork. I was surprised by how much she enjoyed using it. Although, I suppose I shouldn’t have been. The Word is like a balm to our souls. And the straightforward and conversational way in which Fenelon delivers It makes for nothing short of a truly enjoyable experience.
Each time I finished reading a chapter I was either smiling from the grace and love I found within the pages or fell to my knees in conviction. Both of which, in my opinion, are wonderful responses to such a simple book.
The Dialogues of Fenelon is a treasure to be enjoyed for many years to come. Every family should own a copy. It is available on the Lamplighter website for $15.00.
