I am a mom of four wonderful children. Four children who I am trying my best to raise with my husband. However, there are some days when I just feel like I am failing. Like I can’t get these kids to behave. Do you have days like this? Joey and Carla Link have written a book for just those moments, Why Can’t I Get My Kids to Behave?
Why Can’t I Get My Kids to Behave? is a biblical approach to help your children get rid of their poor behavior and help them become obedient children of God. Having obedient children will mean that your children will behave.
Joey and Carla talk with us parents about obedience, what it is, what it is not, and how to get our kids to obey. They tell you straight forward some things you may not have thought about, and others that you have, but didn’t really think twice about. They tell their own stories of how these trick and tips really do work and even show how they, like us, have made mistakes in raising our children to obey.
Each chapter takes us one step closer to changing the way we behave, which in turn, changes the way our children behave. Who would have thought, that a simple change by mom or dad could make a huge change in their child!? I did not think hard about this until now.
There are even tips and encouragement for single parents. While it is a little harder being a single parent, they remind all single parents that it is possible!
There were a few things that stood out to me as I read this book. The first was to work with your child on obeying immediately and with a positive response. This seemed so trivial to me. But as they related this to the story of Samuel, it made sense to me.
Another thing that stood out to me was what obedience wasn’t. In this section, they highlighted a tool that many parents use, including me. The counting 1-2-3 method. While talking about this method, it is brought to the attention of why would we want to give our child to the count of three to obey when we really want them to obey immediately? Doesn’t that make sense?
My favorite part of this book, was at the end when they talked about how it is not too late. Reading the success story of the family with the 15-year-old son was just what I needed to remind me that I could still have a happier home with children of all ages who would obey me and dad.
If you fear that you will never get your kids to behave, or if you think all the books are hard to follow with too many steps to reach the goal, you need to check out this book! It is a simple read with just as simple steps to work on one by one with your kids. You are not changing them, you are changing you and your reactions, which will change them.
