My kids were so excited to try leather stamping from the moment they saw the box for this Basic Stamping kit. It shows all the colorful project possibilities and they were eager to begin right away. The kit includes almost everything needed to get started in leather stamping including a mallet, 2 paint brushes, 3 colors of paint (white, turquoise, and red), 6 pc starter tool set, instructions, and leather for 6 projects. These projects include 2 leather rounders, a luggage tag, bracelet cuff, card case, and a wristlet/key chain. It is recommended for ages 10 and up and retails for $79.00.
The process of leather stamping is pretty simple. You dampen the leather with a sponge and wait for it to return to its normal color, then you stamp designs into the leather by pounding the impression into it. For this kit, once the leather is stamped, you can pain the leather and assemble the project. It does take some fine motor development, but really is a fun hobby. The projects were simple enough that my tweens could do them without a ton of supervision, but complex enough to keep them busy and focused on it for a good amount of time.
The projects in this kit were really fun for my kids. The kit is definitely more female oriented with lots of flowers and butterflies in the projects. They were very proud of themselves and the projects they created. The only improvements that would make it better would be to go a little deeper and clearer in the instruction booklet and to have the different languages divided into separate parts of the instruction book instead of every step being in three languages. It made it much harder to follow the instructions when having to sort through to find the next step in English. Also, I noticed that several of the other sets on the Tandy Leather website include the sponge with the kit, and this kit doesn’t. It seems like such a small thing, but if they included the sponge with the kit, then it really would be all inclusive.
Overall, I think this set is a great introduction to leather stamping. The high-quality leather and tools provide the foundation for a super fun and addictive hobby. I was glad to discover that you can easily order more project leather to continue on with the kit after you finish the initial projects.
