Though moms and dads may be the first to say that parenting is hard work, Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller have written an inspirational training course that tells us rather that Parenting is Heart Work! This 209-page workbook is designed to accompany the book of the same title, Parenting is Heart Work. Along with this manual, the purchaser also receives a link to download eight audio sessions that teach the concepts of the course.
Designed for all parents, young and old, including grandparents, this course really delves into the Biblical reasons behind the daily ‘nitty-gritty’ of rearing Godly children and developing good relationships with them. Because grandparents play such a role in influencing the young ones, there is even advice for them included in the lessons.
This course is broken down into eight lessons that can be used by one parent, a couple, or even a small Bible study group. It could easily be used in counseling and mentoring parents as well. To get the most out of this course, it would be recommended to listen to the audio lesson, and read the suggested chapters of the main book, before answering questions and working on the activities of this workbook. (Though this workbook can be used in entirety by itself as well). Each lesson has self-checks to guide the reader to pause and reflect on what they are reading, taking the time to grade themselves and identify where they need to improve.
Lessons contain actions for both the parents and the child to complete, working together through the book to really develop effective communication and a strong relationship. Topics covered include listening and following instructions, reaching the child’s heart, correction, discipline, and recognizing unhealthy attitudes with an emphasis on how to reconstruct them.
The 45-minute audio lessons are actual recordings from a live presentation and are funny and engaging. I found them very enjoyable to listen to.
Even though my children are nearly grown, all teens and adults, I found plenty of material that could help me to reach their hearts and connect with them on a deeper level. As a mom to adult children still living at home, I have found this to be an exciting yet challenging time where I learn to sit back and enjoy the relationship I have invested in over the years, yet still hold the role of mom when it is needed. I found plenty of material in this book to help guide me in this new chapter of motherhood, where much of my parenting is all about connecting with the hearts of my children.
I have already been sharing this material with friends, and together all of us have agreed that these lessons contain some of the best parenting advice we have received. Not only does it weave Scripture throughout the lessons, strongly centered around the Word of God, but it just makes practical sense too. I highly recommend this entire course to parents of all ages, whether just newly embarking on your parenting journey or looking for ways to connect with older children or grandchildren. This training manual and its accompanying audio lessons is currently selling on the publisher’s website for $49.95 – a small investment to reap eternal rewards!
