History is not my thing, and as a homeschool mom, I feel bad about it. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be my thing for my daughters to ace American history because Workman Publishing has created a handy notebook filled with historical facts.  Everything You Need to Ace American History in One Big Fat Notebook is 500-page study guide written for middle school students.

Everything You Need to Ace American History in One Big Fat Notebook is broken into 10 units:

  • Prehistory to early 1600s
  • Colonial America
  • American Revolution and the Early Republic
  • American Expansion
  • Civil War and Reconstruction
  • Reshaping the Nation
  • World Wars and Modern America
  • World War II
  • Post-World War II Era
  • American History and the Current-ish Events

At the end of each unit, there is a short quiz to check comprehension.

Everything You Need to Ace American History in One Big Fat Notebook isn’t a complete history, but it is a resource. The notebook emphasizes important people, events, and places during each period for the specific unit. Notes are written clearly and concisely which is a plus for those who become overwhelmed with too much information. I appreciate the use of color to highlight details, and I’ve found that the techniques used could easily be transferred by the student to any other content he is studying. For instance, mnemonic devices are used to help learn information as well as drawing boxes around information that needs to stand out from the rest.  The note taking techniques are skills that can be easily transferred when studying from a history textbook.

If you are looking for an additional resource book for American History, I would recommend Everything You Need to Ace American History in One Big Fat Notebook because the information is provided in bite-size chunks which I think is good for a middle school student who doesn’t want to become overwhelmed with too much information or a parent who doesn’t remember much about history.

Everything You Need to Ace American History in One Big Fat Notebook retails for $14.95.
