In our homeschool I am always looking for great literature to add to my children’s reading lists. Many of the great literature selections were penned by Christians and non-Christians alike. Having the option of studying the ones written by Christians is an important piece to our liberal arts high school home education. With so many great books out there to choose from it is great having a comprehensive collection for my high schoolers like the ones found in the Great Christian Classics Volume 1 Set from Generations.
The Great Christian Classics Volume 1 Set is a study of literature that guides the student through the greatest life narratives. This comprehensive study of great books will help your student understand the life, theology, and worldview of some of the greatest Christian men to have walked this earth. Included in the book set are a hardback textbook and paperback workbook.
Within the pages of the 633 paged textbook your student will study the five Narratives of Faith of Augustine’s Confessions, Patrick’s Confessions, Knox’s History of the Reformation in Scotland, Bunyan’s Grace Abounding, and Paton’s missionary Autobiography. Each of the narratives includes numbered annotations and detailed black and white pictures that enhance learning. The heavyweight paper within the book highlighted the words and I found the type to be large enough to be pleasing to the eye without much strain. I appreciated the wide margins found on each other pages to jot down notes along the way too.
The paperback Workbook includes a helpful daily schedule that details the entire course of study for you. Also included are assignments for each chapter as well as vocabulary, questions, and essays to be completed throughout the course. Each of the five books has a separate comprehensive exam. Don’t let that scare you the teacher, a complete teacher answer key is provided in the back of the book to make this course user friendly for you. The generous copy write of the Workbook allows the purchaser to make copies within their family or up to 10 children within a co-op setting. I found this especially helpful as I plan to use this course with subsequent children.
This is a robust literature course that challenged my rising Sophomore daughter from page one. While reading is not her favorite subject it is a necessary task to acquire knowledge in life. We worked through this course together often trading off reading paragraphs and stopping along the way to check for comprehension. The worksheet questions were extremely helpful in making sure she was in fact retaining and comprehending the material. We often did many of the questions aloud while I did have her write out the vocabulary and Bible research portions.
I believe this course gives a solid study of church history literature and I know when my child completes the course next May she will have a firm foundation in the great Christian classics. Time and Time again through the course of history we have seen that the empires of man will crumble and fall. It’s nice having a solid foundation through literature which stands firmly upon the study of Jesus Christ who lives forever.
