The Responsible Rabbit Set includes a Kids Reader, Activity Book, and an Idea Book. It was written by Joni Downey and published by Characters of Character, a non-profit organization. The Responsible Rabbit Posters and Bulletin Board Ideas & Activities and the Responsible Rabbit Activity Book are each $15.50. The Let’s Be Responsible Kids Reader is $10. Links to purchase each of the three individually on Amazon are found on the Characters of Character website.
This set covers a wide range of ages. Designed to carry over from school to home, I found this appropriate for older toddlers (with more assistance) up through the elementary ages who can work more independently. This has been used in public schools and would also be appropriate for homeschool co-ops and homeschool settings. Responsible Rabbit is a bright pink bunny who shares the message of being responsible for his own things - and, by default, the student also responsible for his own belongings, and jobs.
I used the reader, Let's Be Responsible, as a read-aloud to my elementary and preschool aged children. There are fill-in pages that would make a copy purchased for each student helpful. It also includes a page to laminate for students to bring home their Responsible Rabbit wherever they go, create a puppet show, take selfies, and more. Pages at the back of the book have space for the student to record their own story of the things they are responsible for, including who, why, where, etc.
Responsible Rabbit Posters and Bulletin Board Ideas & Activities has many pages that would be cute laminated and used on a bulletin board or as classroom decorations. Many are in full color. Full color certificates are also included. This book would make using Responsible Rabbit and his message easy to carry through the whole classroom.
I had a bit of confusion regarding copying. All three books have reproduction prohibition statements, but there are many places that suggest making copies. After contacting Characters of Character, I was told that copies are permitted with permission. One set of the three books is sufficient for a classroom if you request copy permission, though I do think with the Let’s Be Responsible reader, it would be easier to have a copy for each student.
This set was well done. It makes decorating a classroom around the responsibility theme incredibly simple. For this homeschooling mother who is not skilled in decorating or making a cute classroom for my students, this is perfect. Decorating with a greater purpose, aiming to build character, is a great idea. Teaching responsibility is a years-long endeavor, so beginning early with a long-term goal is ideal. I didn’t find this to be anything remarkably new and different in teaching responsibility, but I did appreciate the simplicity, requiring little effort on my part while using colorful illustrations with animals to introduce the concept while keeping children engaged.
