Most of us have felt like a duck, a sitting duck or even an ugly duckling, in any given area, at some point of our lives. I’m not a duck,by John Walsh, is a fantastic read for all of us recovering ducks.

John, a master storyteller, shares 30 stories from his own life, each with a morale lesson. He walks you through the greatest lessons he has learned in his walk with God, from being mistreated and misunderstood in his childhood to being one of few authors published by Moody, to discovering he is not a duck, to even more. Each story is well laid out over a few pages, easily read in a few minutes, but the lessons shared are like flowers planted in early spring, blooming into their fullness over the days following.

Before reading the book, I read the back cover which invites the reader to pour a cup of coffee and join John on the front porch. As I opened the book over the days that followed, I found myself with my cup of coffee, internalizing the reading as if I were listening intently to an old friend reliving the memories that shaped him.

At the end of each chapter is a place for the reader to write the Hidden Life Principle that was discovered through the story, to personalize the reading and apply it to one’s own life. Mr. Walsh also has a series of video clips on YouTube, one for each chapter of the book. The video clips range from one to five minutes in length and bring the chapter to life.

With thirty chapters, it would be perfect to work through one a day for a month, which I anticipated for myself. Unfortunately, I simply could not follow through. I enjoyed his stories so much so that I found myself covering several chapters a day. It has been a short time since I first read the book and when I sat down to write my review, I perused the book a second time. Before long, I realized that I had reread several chapters once again. I am reminded of how I never tire of hearing the same ol’ stories from my father. This book is definitely a keeper, I imagine I’ll only get rid of it if I feel that I need to pass it on to someone else that could greatly benefit from it.
