As a Christian, it is important to note that the holiday season is not just about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. This is also the season for giving to those in need by volunteering or donating to a charitable organization or cause. The Sparkle Box, by Jill Hardie, and presented by Worthy Publishing Group, provides a beautiful story that describes how we honor God by being a blessing to others. This book is a great read but also gives the basis for a beautiful family tradition that can be passed on for generations.

The Sparkle Box begins with Sam window shopping with his mom a few weeks before Christmas. As they return home, he notes all the things his Christmas list and wonders if a sparkling box located on the mantle is for him. His mother explains that this special gift will be opened later. Over the course of several days, his family makes stops at various locations that Sam has never been to before.  During this time they drop off food and blankets all while learning about ways to help local people and those in other countries.  Hearing all of this information eventually compels Sam to make some donation decisions of his own. After giving a man a candy bar and mittens, he begins to focus on other ways he can shine the light of God in the direction of the less fortunate.

On Christmas day Sam was elated to see all the items from his list under the tree. Even though he had everything he wanted the sparkly box grabbed his attention. He sat on the couch with his parents so they could open this precious gift together. Inside this surprise were a few pieces of paper with words written on them. Sam was a bit confused as he read the notes aloud. Each slip of paper displayed a charitable action completed by the family. His mother explained that every item inside of the Sparke Box was a gift to Jesus since it was his birthday. By helping these people they were showing the love of Christianity and sharing the light of Jesus with the world.

In the Kemp household, it is important for our children to have a clear understanding that gifts at Christmas and throughout the year aren't the only way to share or feel joy. Giving to others not only helps someone in need but truly pleases our savior. This book is a perfect example of a way to explain to your younger children the importance of service to your neighbor, community, or anyone in need on Earth. Whether your reach can be small or gigantic, it is imperative that we all understand the importance of assisting others.

The Sparkle Box by Jill Hardieis a great book for kids from 1 to 92. The storyline flows well and pairs perfectly with the holiday illustrations. Hopefully, this tale inspires readers to adopt this faith-centered tradition and pass it on to their families. A Sparkle Box is also included in the back of each book. Depending on the current promotion, this book is available from various retailers online and in-store for $7.99 - $9.99.
