God Speaks to Me Through Animals, Insects, & Creatures of the Bible: My Bible Word + Art Devotional by Lynne Marie Davis is a fun, interactive, consumable devotional. Your child will learn about God’s Word and 25 animals, insects, and creatures that God created and how they intertwine into scripture. There are 25 devotionals in the book. Each devotional is six pages in length. The softcover workbook is 178 pages. The cost of the workbook is $9.95.

This devotional could be used in the private Christian school, home setting, or Sunday School setting. The publishers suggested age for this devotional is 8 and older. My 12 years old daughter has been working through this devotional and has enjoyed it. Like I stated above, each devotional is six pages in length. The first page introduces the animal and the Bible verse. A page-long devotional talks about how each animal, insect, or creature uniquely fits into God’s perfect plan. For example, the sparrow is a very ordinary bird that blends into nature. They are small and insignificant to individuals when it comes to birds in general. It is easy for this tiny bird to get lost among so many. In biblical times they were sold for a small price, two for a penny. Matthew 10:26-31 says, “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside for Father’s care.” For clarification, only verse 29 is used. So, we see that scripture tells us that God watches over even the tiniest of creatures such as the sparrow. Not even one falls without Him knowing. If He sees a sparrow HOW MUCH MORE will he watch over, YOU! At the end of the page is a prayer. The second page is a Journal page. This page will differ for each devotion as far as the questions or content. They all start with the same first bullet point fill-in-the-blank which is, Thank you, God, for... and then for this specific devotion there are three more bullet points; writing out a verse, a fill-in-the-blank, and a multiple choice. The third page is a picture of a sparrow and within the sparrow is a maze that the child must do. On the fourth page is a word search. On the fifth page is a coloring page with a picture of a sparrow surrounded by a frame. Below the picture is a saying. For the sparrow it says, Sparrow He cares for Me. The sixth page is a blank page with the word Sparrow written at the top. This is a space for your child to make a drawing of their own. In the back of the workbook, you will find the solutions to all the puzzles and questions in the devotions. Your child will learn about some of the following animals, insects, and creatures:

  • Sheep
  • Dove
  • Falcon
  • Grasshopper
  • Donkey
  • Ant
  • Bear
  • Fox
  • Moth
  • Camel

I liked the devotional for its interactive features. Most children’s devotionals are similar to adult devotionals. They are usually a page or two in length. There is a reading and a bible verse at the end of the first page and a picture opposite the devotional. This devotional allows the child an opportunity to truly interact with what they read. They learn about scripture and how God cares for the animals, insects, and creatures and uses them as examples to explain his great love for us. Then God’s Word is reinforced in their minds and hearts through various activities.

I would most definitely recommend God Speaks To Me Through Animals, Insects, & Creatures of the Bible: My Bible Word + Art Devotional to parents, educators, and leaders looking for a devotional that your child or a group of children can immerse themselves into God’s Word. After they have completed the workbook, they will have a wonderful workbook of colored pictures as well as their own creative drawings. They can also use the workbook to review each animal to remember God’s amazing truths.
