In her book, Comparison Girl: Lessons from Jesus on Me-Free Living in a Measure-Up World, Shannon Popkin helps guide her reader to leave behind her measure-up comparison attitude and embrace the upside-down teachings of Jesus to build better connections with others.
Popkin’s uses real-life examples, both of her own and others, as examples for the type of behavior one does and does not want to portray. This ability to humble herself and share with her readers her own failings and Comparison Girl tendencies endears her to her reader. She is not just someone preaching to you, but a friend who is bringing you along on a journey to embrace the teachings of Christ more fully.
In this six-week Bible study, you will learn about the different ways Comparison Girls are trying to measure-up. From comparing our sin to others to our need to outdo them, Popkin uses scripture, personal stories, and analogies in her examples as she guides you to leave your get-ahead pride and measure-up life behind.
Popkin shows how choosing Jesus’ upside-down teachings brings closer relationships and unity with those around us. Leaving behind our Comparison Girls ways blesses not only us but others as we put ourselves in a position for Jesus to use us as instruments in building His kingdom.
I enjoyed Popkin’s take on the different ways we compare ourselves to others, some we may not even realize we are doing. She had thought-provoking questions to encourage greater insight into our own motives and Comparison Girl tendencies, leading toward a shift in mindset.
She is a wonderful storyteller and her honesty in sharing personal stories was refreshing. She left you motivated to do better without feeling judged for your own Comparison Girl habits. Her humility was apparent in her writing.
If you find yourself tired of being robbed of happiness and joy due to constant comparison to others, then Comparison Girl: Lessons from Jesus on Me-Free Living in a Measure-Up World by Shannon Popkin deserves a place in your home.
