Christian Heroes: Then and Now Series Review by J. Baird
YWAM Publishinghttp://www.ywampublishing.com/
About a year ago, I received YWAM publishing’s George Mueller as a free bonus book though one of my favorite curriculum catalogs. Since at that time I was looking for engaging, non-fiction books for my 10 and 13-year-old children, I immediately read this book so that I could preview it before turning it over into their hands. I was thoroughly impressed not only with the subject matter but with its presentation. Knowing that my children (as well as myself) would love these, I quickly placed an order for twelve more volumes in the “Christian Heroes: Then and Now” series. These true-life accounts of men and women who have answered God’s call for their lives, have added richly to our knowledge of geography, history and social studies, as well as for their intended purpose of telling us the stories of these heroes of the Christian faith. The reader sees the title character’s amazing commitment to trust in the Lord, even in the face of seemingly impossible circumstances. Their testimonies are faith strengthening and truly encouraging. The authors, Janet & Geoff Benge, have written these biographies in a very engaging novel-style format that quickly grabs the attention of the reader. The books are written for ages 10 and up, and yet are not so simplistic as to be inspiring and uplifting even to the adult audience. Both my avid reader and my reluctant reader are enjoying these books immensely, so much so that they have asked me to order more in this series as well as books in the “Heroes of History” series by the same authors. What a wonderful way to build the faith of our children as they see God’s kingdom expanded through the lives of some very ordinary men and women who are able to do extraordinary things through faith, prayer, and the Providential hand of God!
