All The Feels For Teens by Elizabeth Laing Thompson is published by Wander, an Imprint of Tyndale House Publishers. In her book, Thompson tackles the often-overwhelming range of emotions that teenage girls experience. The heart of the book is providing scriptural foundations and practical strategies to enable teen girls to take captive their feelings, knowing God Himself is the creator of all things, even emotions. This is not just a book to read. At the end of each chapter is a section entitled, Feeling Your Way Forward which includes journal prompts, prayer prompts, and lifelines (scriptures). Throughout the chapters, there are also charts to be filled out and quizzes on various topics. All The Feels For Teens is a softcover book and retails for $11.99.
This book is intended to be used by teenage girls. The book can be worked through by a teen alone, between a mother and daughter, or mentor and mentees looking to learn together. Various types of learners could use this book. There are 14 chapters in the book and no specific time frame recommended for the book's completion. On average, chapters are about 12 pages in length. Nearly half of the chapters contain quizzes or interactive charts to be filled out.
For example, one chart entitled, Myths about Feelings, on one side states a myth and then asks the teen to give scripture or fact that proves it's not true. One of the quizzes is, Is Social Media Taking Over Your Life? Chapter 10, Praying Through All Your Emotions, teens will find the reassurance that God is always there, no matter how they feel. When our own emotions are all over the place, God stays the same, ALWAYS! "Our closeness with God doesn't depend on how we feel – it depends on God's love. And while our feelings change all the time, God's love never does." Finally, there is a list of ideas to try when you get stuck in a rut in your prayer life or just don't quite know what or how to pray. At the end of this chapter, one of the journal prompts is to discuss one of the idea strategies you implemented. An example, Writing down your prayer like a letter to God. One of the lifeline scriptures about prayer is Proverbs 10:25, When the tempest passes, the wicked is no more, but the righteous is established forever."
Overall, I thought this book gives teenage girls great scriptural tools to take charge of the floodgate of emotions that often consume so many. I have five daughters', from one end of the spectrum to the other regarding emotions. My teen daughter that I chose to work on this book with tends to struggle with her emotions. This book came at the perfect time. I did have to tip-toe my way in as not to make her feel like I thought she "needed it," as I knew she would take it the wrong way. We have slowly been working through the book, and it has been helping her see herself in a new and more positive light. Being a teenager is hard. Add in all the emotions, and sometimes you end up with a hot mess. However, between the relatable stories, scripture, and application, teens can be on their way to being more confident and have a whole new perspective on emotions. I would recommend this book to others.
