Summit Math Review by Sharon Odor

Summit Math is an online video and workbook program. The author designed this program for anyone learning algebra or wanting a better understanding of algebra. We used this program for my ninth grade student, and their understanding of algebra has deepened. This program is easy to jump right in and begin learning.

Summit Math designed the workbooks to correspond with the videos on their website. The video lessons are at the beginning of the workbook. The video lessons are short lessons to help the student truly understand the concept the author introduces. Parents will appreciate how thoroughly the concept is explained in each video. I appreciated that the author uses real-world examples in the lessons. I felt that this shows how algebra is used outside of the schoolroom.

There are seven workbooks for the Algebra 1 course. While the lessons can be used without the instructional videos, we found that the videos help the student understand how to solve the problem. Each workbook’s layout starts with the lesson sheets, followed by the answer key to the lessons. Following the answer key to the lessons are the homework pages, and then those are followed by the answer key to the homework assignments. The author designed the worksheets to have ample space for the student to work out the problem and find the answer. A page follows each lesson worksheet for any extra notes your student has about that lesson. The instruction provided during the videos is beneficial to completing the lessons in the workbooks.

Each video is designed to be a quick lesson; most videos are around 30 minutes, though a few are shorter. There are only four videos that last around an hour. The videos have clear titles that state what topic will be covered, and the workbook titles match the videos, which makes finding the lesson in the workbook easy. The videos have straightforward controls to enlarge, pause, rewind, or fast forward when needed. There are sixty-nine videos for the Algebra 1 course and seventy-two videos for the Algebra 2 course.

The videos are visuals of the workbook. The speaker uses a calm and clear voice to guide students through the lesson. Some parts of the video move quickly, so we would pause the video to fill in the information and to make sure that the information provided has been understood. The first five video lessons of Algebra 1 cover percentages. The following four video lessons teach about rates. The following ten lessons involve graphs, graphing, and graphing equations. The section teaching about exponents contains nine video lessons. Following those lessons, the next section of thirteen videos educates students about polynomials, monomials, binomials, and trinomials.

Topics such as squares, factoring, substitutions, eliminations, and many more topics are covered in the Algebra 1 lessons. The author thoughtfully includes review videos throughout the course, which help to ensure your student understands each concept covered.

My ninth-grade student has said they are glad we have the videos because the videos are helping my student understand how algebra is used in everyday life. The lessons help my student understand which equations are used for each scenario and the methods needed to find the correct answers. We have noticed a significant change in my student’s overall grades in their math class, and their understanding of algebra has increased significantly.
