Famous Foods Unit Study Review by Carol Hayes
Making Family Counthttps://www.makingfamilycount.com/
Famous Foods Study is a seven-week unit study created by Making Family Count, LLC for kindergarten through sixth grade students. It is available in print and digital form. The digital only format is available for $24.95, and the print/digital combination is available for $52.33 at http://www.makingfamilycount.com. The printed version includes the unit study, a companion journal, a map poster, and a set of stickers.
This unit study incorporates history, geography, writing, and art, and can be used with different ages simultaneously, which is helpful for families with multiple children. It can also be used in a co-op setting. The first six weeks covers popular foods, including pizza, macaroni and cheese, French fries, chicken nuggets, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and ice cream. The seventh week is designated for field trips and further exploration.
The daily assignments are both simple and straightforward. Each day the parent reads a brief lesson aloud to the children while the children complete the corresponding student journal pages. The daily read aloud lessons are two pages long. The first day of the week generally covers introductory information about the featured food. The second day of the week consists of a brief history lesson on the featured food. The family explores geography the next day, and the fourth day consists of cooking the food of the week. Every Friday, students work on a special project in which they create their own restaurant. At the end of six weeks, students will host a grand opening celebration for their newly created restaurant.
Famous Foods is a great complement to homeschool geography studies. I appreciate how this study is designed for a wide range of ages and allows my entire family to learn interesting facts about popular foods. I also appreciate how this open and go unit study has a planned scope and sequence, but it also has blank planning pages that allow me to customize the unit study to meet my family's unique needs.
In addition to engaging lessons, there are suggestions for fun ideas, games, movies, television shows, and documentaries. The unit study also includes QR codes containing YouTube playlists and book lists for the famous foods. My daughter enjoyed scanning the QR codes. I highly recommend this unit study for families looking for a fun supplement to homeschool curriculum.
