GRAY, Tenn. - Aug. 31, 2021 - PRLog -- Prior to the pandemic, the rate of military families choosing to homeschool averaged around 8%, about five percentage points higher than the general population. During the virus outbreak, the number of military parents opting to homeschool jumped to 13%, according to the 2020 Military Family Lifestyle Survey Comprehensive Report, a lifestyle survey of military families conducted by Blue Star Families (BSF). The BSF report goes on to add that “homeschooling has become a growing practice among military families to offset some of the challenges of military life, such as relocation and gaps in child(ren)’s education.”
Even before the pandemic shut down schools, homeschooling was a popular educational choice among the military. Why? A common motivation is the inconsistency in academic standards in both public and private school systems. On their website, the Department of Defense states that “the average child in a military family will move six to nine times during a school career.” Due to this, military parents see homeschooling as the only option that gives their children consistency and stability in their education without unwanted learning gaps.
“SchoolhouseTeachers.com makes it easier for military families to homeschool by being completely accessible online,” says Gena Suarez, publisher of The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine. “It’s portable and always available 24/7, 365. As a military family, that means not having to lug heavy textbooks when moving in the middle of the year or risk going over the military-issued weight allowance for household goods.” Families just need an internet connection and laptop or tablet to access the materials. Gena goes on to add, “Plus, if families choose to homeschool outside the traditional school calendar, they have access to all the courses and resources year round. No disruption. Including access to all the parent materials, like the menus and parent eBooks. Really it’s a win/ win!”
