Analyzing the Masters
One of the best ways to learn is to analyze the masters. Two of the courses available on SchoolhouseTeachers.com do just that. Benjamin Franklin Writing Method, taught by Cheri Blomquist, helps middle and high school students improve their writing skills using the same method employed by Benjamin Franklin—imitating the masters. Your student will learn to analyze good literature and apply what they learn to their own writing, focusing on the arrangement and presentation of ideas. Some of that good literature comes from J.R.R. Tolkien. For this, we have Christian Values in J.R.R. Tolkien. In this 18-week course, Dr. Steven Hake helps juniors and seniors ponder the Biblical issues raised by Tolkien in the Lord of the Rings series, The Hobbit, Silmarillion, and the Carpenter biography. Students will write two short papers and one 10- to 12-page final paper. This course is worth between a half and a whole credit.
