Breaking Out of Your Comfort Zone
Our own native language is like a comfortable old couch. We know it well. We have rested in it, entertained guests with it, and felt comfortable and safe in the familiar. Just as our old couch sometimes provides surprises, like old food or pencils stuck in between the cushions, our own native language surprises us with new words or punctuation rules we don’t know well. Although it seems we can always learn new things about our native language, it is good to break free of that comfort zone. You don’t have to throw away that old couch, but you can get a nice, new chair to add to the room. Consider Spanish with Carol Henderson. This is a 34-week elementary Spanish course that contains biweekly video-based instruction with weekly worksheets. Carol teaches basic vocabulary, Bible verses, animals, colors, days, weather, seasons, and more in its lessons. Elementary through high school students can opt to learn French. Greg Shone is a certified French teacher and coauthor of French Essentials. He has brought SchoolhouseTeachers.com more than two years of French lessons. Students will begin by learning the pronunciation of the letters and will quickly advance to simple French phrases. Weekly downloadable PDF worksheets and audio to teach correct pronunciation are provided. Years One and Two are complete and available. Year Three is currently in progress. It’s never too late to start learning something new.
