When we hear the word “communication,” we typically think of the spoken word, though the written word would likely run a close second. Two of the many forms of communication taught on SchoolhouseTeachers.com are American Sign Language with Sandra Heflin and Beginning Violin with Nancy Blue. Through American Sign Language, middle and high school students will build a vocabulary of approximately 350 basic signs, as well as become adept at signing the alphabet. They will also gain a basic understanding of the Deaf Community and culture. As students progress through this 15-week course, they will learn how to sign greetings, introductions, numbers, time, holidays, and more. Lessons are video based and include printable resources. Music is also communication. A story unfolds as a piece is played. Students can learn how to tell stories with a violin and a bow. Nancy Blue is a violin teacher and professional violinist who has provided 31 video-based lessons for students interested in pursuing this instrument. Not only does Nancy teach students how to play music, but she instructs them in how to buy a violin and take care of it, tune a violin, and hold it correctly. She also uses her lessons to instill a solid foundation in faith with the music the student is learning.
