Ditch the Desk and Go Outside
I hear what you’re saying . . . it’s freezing where I live! Don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. Nature/Outdoors is such an amazing course that the whole family will learn a tremendous amount, even if you never venture outside. Erin Dean has provided SchoolhouseTeachers.com with a 14-unit course with multiple tracks and multiple lessons in each unit about plants such as wildflowers, evergreens, acorns; animals and insects such as bears, birds, owls, coyotes, wolves, squirrels; habitats like sand, ponds, and creeks; and other topics including cold weather, the night sky, and rainbows. Videos and informative websites help teach the topics, and students can learn even more through hands-on activities and journaling. Ditch the Desk is a hands-on course for children in grade K-5. Various units include writing your own book, learning about backyard critters and birds, baking with math, meeting photographer Evelyn Cameron, what it was like growing up Dutch, and more. Lessons are even more fun with recipes, poems, games, and crafts for little ones to enjoy.
