Exploring the Kingdoms
It sounds like a course in medieval history or a Lord of the Rings literary adventure, but it’s not. The kingdoms I’m talking about are those found in nature—mammals, fungi, plants, and so on. Biology with Ruth Sundeen takes middle and high school students on a tour of the various Kingdoms—Monera, Protista, Animalia, Fungi, and Plantae. Weekly lessons with hands-on activities, easy labs, quizzes, and much more make up a full-year course. Ruth discusses such topics as cellular respiration, cellular reproduction, and evolution versus creation. She even provides dissection labs complete with photos. Animal Science with Sonya Brouillette is another course geared toward high school students. Sonya discusses the science and classification of most of the animal kingdom, beginning with insects and working her way up to include mammals. She takes an in-depth look at animal habitats, environments, behavior, and proper care; digestive systems and how they affects animal needs; farm animals; and much more. There are homework assignments, reading assignments, worksheets, and occasional video links. Nine months of weekly lessons are provided.
