Helpful Skills
With so much emphasis being placed on studying hard and getting good grades in subjects like math, language arts, and science, certain skills have largely been forgotten, skills like cooking from scratch, sewing, managing the home, etc. Parents must take time to be sure their children—boys and girls alike—know some of these basic skills. SchoolhouseTeachers.com helps parents with this task by providing courses such as Homesteading with Lisa Barthuly and Beginning Sewing: Historical Costumes with Amy Puetz. Found under the Family/For Parents tab, homesteading is an ongoing course with new lessons each month that teaches us how to can our foods, make natural cleaners, make our own sunscreen, make homemade granola and ketchup, put together an emergency kit, and so on. If you’ve ever wanted to be frugal and natural at the same time, you can learn a great deal from Lisa. Amy Puetz teaches students some of the basics of sewing by relating it to various periods in history—Pilgrims, sailors, Civil War, and Victorian era. There are projects that boys and girls can both enjoy, and the skills they learn will enable them to create for years to come.
