Pirates and Protons
There aren’t many places where you can learn about pirates and protons at the same time. How about electrons and economics or chocolate and quantum mechanics? Economics with Mike Sims will discuss pirates and chocolate as they relate to economics. Mike will also discuss the economics of gamma rays, football, and ski slopes, as well as Christmas budgets and twelve famous economists. Middle and high school students will have reading assignments, watch videos, conduct research projects, view PowerPoint presentations, read news stories, and take self-tests as they learn about production and consumption. This course counts as an economics/business credit. Students who successfully complete all twelve units (36 weekly lessons) can earn one academic credit. Friendly Chemistry with Joey Hajda takes care of the protons, electrons, and quantum mechanics. Joey helps high school students build a solid foundation for more advanced chemistry classes, while they earn the equivalent of one-half credit. Through Joey’s twelve lessons, chemistry is presented in a way that is not hard or intimidating. There is some text to read and a group of activities, as well as laboratory experiences, videos, and worksheet pages. Each lesson also has a test. Students will study the elements, atoms, electrons, and ions and will be introduced to determining charges on ions and quantum mechanics.
