Over the past several months, we have been blessed with words of wisdom from Deborah Wuehler as she co-hosts the Hey, Mama! Homeschool Show podcast. Deborah is the senior editor of The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine and has been working at The Old Schoolhouse® for over twenty years. She is also Director of the Production Department, where The Old Schoolhouse® produces the print and digital magazine, supplements, The Homeschool Minute weekly e-newsletter, and the SmartMama Planner. She also speaks nationwide at many webinars, workshops, and conventions.

Let’s learn more about Deborah!

What is your favorite resource from The Old Schoolhouse® for helping homeschooling families?

I love the digital magazine at www.TOSMagazine.com as it really showcases much of what we do at the company. There is not only the most current issue of the magazine available, but you can also access our blog, our weekly newsletter, and our curriculum side, SchoolhouseTeachers.com, from there.

What do you do outside of The Old Schoolhouse®?

I love to spend time with my family and my grandson. I love our family walks around our town and playing games or reading books together. I love attending my daughter’s orchestra performances, serving at our local church in Sunday School, and singing with the worship team.

Please tell us a little about your family. How many children are you homeschooling? (Or how many children have you homeschooled?) What are their ages/grades?

I have homeschooled eight children since the birth of our firstborn thirty-two years ago. We have graduated seven so far, and all are doing well in college, careers, or ministry. I have one left to homeschool through high school. He is a freshman this year.

Tell us about your personal homeschool style.

I started with a traditional textbook curriculum, then moved to a more Charlotte Mason style of homeschooling, and then to more of an eclectic approach choosing what would work best for each child individually.

What three words would you use to describe homeschooling? Biblical, Discipleship, Freedom background photo of flowers

What have you learned from your homeschooling experience?

That God is faithful to fill in where I think there may have been gaps. He takes what I offer Him in obedience to disciple these children, and He brings forth His plans. I have learned to relax and trust in the Lord.

What is your favorite homeschool subject to teach?

I love teaching Bible and writing.

Are there any homeschool subjects you outsource?

I outsource higher math, starting in pre-algebra and music instruction.

If you could give one piece of advice to homeschoolers, what would it be?

Lean not on your own understanding, but in all your (homeschool) ways, acknowledge the guidance of the LORD and His Word, and He will make your homeschool path straight, (Proverbs 3:-5-6).

Are there any final words about homeschooling you would like to share?

Homeschooling is all about freedom for you and your children. Freedom from fear, anxiety, bullying, ungodly philosophies, and more. And it is freedom to grow into what God has created each child to be in the comfort and nurture of their own home and family.
