Taking Off the Blinders
When we learn more about issues affecting us and those around us, it’s as if the blinders are taken off. When we understand, we are better equipped to do something to bring about a positive outcome and to fight for justice. Mock Trial with Deborah Burton, a homeschooling mother of two and a licensed attorney, helps middle and high school students understand various topics such as the judicial branch of the government, the First Amendment, contracts, criminal law, tax reform, and more. More than a dozen units are available that follow the same basic monthly layout: Week One: Legal Concept, Week Two: Case Summary, Week Three: Related Skill, Week Four: Case Holding (Outcome and Reasoning). Students will develop their own mock trial, complete assignments, and take quizzes on the topic presented. High school students can earn one-half credit. A parent’s guide and resources are included. Social Justice with Kurt Hoffman will take the blinders off to the issue of modern-day slavery. Sixteen lessons for middle and high school students are presented through videos, reading assignments, vocabulary, reflection, and critical thinking exercises to educate, enlighten, and empower young people to become modern-day abolitionists. It educates students on the issue of modern-day slavery and human trafficking and compares and contrasts it to historical slavery. Students will be encouraged to think critically about why slavery is wrong and will be empowered to serve alongside others working toward the abolishment of modern-day slavery.
