The Familyman
Can I just say up front to all of you moms homeschooling an only child–stop apologizing for having one child. You don’t need to do that, and it bothers me that we in the homeschooling world have made you or anyone else feel the need to apologize for the number of children you have.
Moms come up to me all the time and apologize for having one child or two or NINE!!! There is nothing spiritual about the number of children in your quiver.
That said I also know there is a lot of pressure on only child homeschoolers. The pressure at first comes from others’ questions, such as: “Shouldn’t you have him/her with other children? He needs interaction with kids his age. It’s not good to be at home all day long by himself …”
What’s worse is that those outside voices become inside voices and you begin to replay those comments in spite of the conviction that you believe you should homeschool your child.
Listen to me, Mom. If you believe you should homeschool your only child, THEN homeschool your child. I really believe that only children benefit from being homeschooled. After all, we want our children to know how to interact with and get contentment with their future family. The best place to learn all that is in YOUR HOME!!!
Experts tell us to get them out of the home and into the world. But your child needs to see how he fits into the family and that a family is a family no matter how many children there are and what better place to learn that than at HOME.
So, I’ll let the other experts on this page tell you how to homeschool your only child. I’ll just reiterate what I said earlier, “Homeschool your only child!!”
And even if you feel like you need to keep up a good appearance, fight the urge and … be real!
Todd

“I look forward to THM every Wednesday. I really enjoy Deborah’s articles. For some reason, it must be God, she always writes about what I am needing to hear. Her ability to put scripture and God in the middle of all her articles keeps me coming back. I recently have been enjoying the Youngs’ [articles] because I have a young man (10) in my house. The encouragement of the Youngs is fabulous. I thank God for parents like them that pave the way for parents like myself and my husband.”

“Thanks ever so much. I love the encouraging articles! I really loved the list of 25 all in one place. Nice to have this little bit of “free” encouragement in my mail. I don’t have funds to subscribe or purchase frills and with also working more than half time I don’t have time to search it out. May God bless you exceedingly.”
