An Evening in Bethlehem

By Michelle Beazer

My favourite Christmas event is the yearly community creche service called “An Evening in Bethlehem” held at our church the first weekend in December. Creche is a French word for “Nativity.” This is the first Christmas event we attend each season.

The service starts with Bible readings about the birth of Jesus as well as choirs and soloists singing new and traditional Christmas hymns. It is really a beautiful and touching reminder of Jesus and all He has done for us.

At the back of the chapel, we have accordion folding doors that open at the end of the service to a display of thousands of nativity scenes—everything from children's toy Nativity sets and books to beautiful one-of-a-kind handmade scenes. They are so beautiful! People from miles around bring their Nativity scenes to be displayed and shared with others. Many of them have been collected from around the world or are treasured family heirlooms. It is so wonderful to know there are so many people willing to share their beautiful treasures to testify of their love of Jesus Christ and His divine birth.

Even the refreshments are offered with our dining area all decorated to look like an old world market. With stalls of fruit and bread and cakes and mulled cider for the guests to enjoy while they think of our Saviour and the world He was born into.
