Homeschool Music

Including music as part of your homeschool can be a fun and rewarding experience for the whole family. Previous music education or a background in music training is not necessary to learn music at home. All that is needed is an interest and purpose in learning music. Here, we share some of the homeschool music options that are available to help you teach this subject:

  • Music Lessons in the Community
  • Homeschool Music Classes
  • Online Music Classes
  • Curriculums to Purchase
  • Music Appreciation

As there are many options available, there is sure to be something that will work for your family.

Music Lessons in the Community

One avenue available to homeschoolers is to take music lessons in their community. This could be lessons from a private teacher or a music studio, conservatory, or school. You can choose from private, semi-private, or group lessons. Some music teachers or schools may have more availability for daytime lessons to better fit with your homeschool hours. Also of importance in choosing music lessons in the community is making sure that the teaching style, method, and personality is a fit for your child. Music teachers and studios may hold recitals throughout the year which your child may enjoy participating in.

Homeschool Music Classes

For this option, check to see whether your homeschool group or association has homeschool music classes or programs for students. Or perhaps a community centre close by is offering a music class just for homeschoolers. If none of these options is available in your area, then try one of the other suggestions in this article or see if there is interest from other homeschool families to start a homeschool music group or class and begin the steps to organize one. In addition to homeschool music classes, you may like to consider and see if there would be interest in starting a homeschool band or orchestra.

Online Music Classes

Learning music online could be the right choice for your child and family. Online music classes make it convenient and accessible to learn music when it fits into your schedule. You can take online classes just as you would at a studio - on the same day and time each week - or you can choose an online music program that offers flexibility in completing lessons. Some online classes provide instruction both with books and videos accessed or watched either online or on a DVD. Online classes and lessons are available for guitar, ukulele, piano, fiddle, music theory, and more. From The Old Schoolhouse’s Reviews, take a look at these resources for online classes:

Curriculums to Purchase

There are many music curriculums for homeschool families to choose from. You may decide to use one curriculum for the entire year or perhaps use a different one every month or few months. Some of those choices, found in The Old Schoolhouse’s Resource Guides, include:

Music Appreciation

Another way to incorporate music into your homeschool is to begin with music appreciation. This means learning about areas such as composers, the different styles of music, and perhaps some music theory, too. Learning more about music is an enriching experience as part of homeschool music. Below are a few resources to take a look at for adding music appreciation to your curriculum:
